In this part of our Defensive Driving series, we review procedures truckers should follow in the event of an emergency. Share and reinforce these measures with your drivers to keep them and others safe on the road.
If Your Vehicle Stalls or Breaks Down
The first thing a driver should do is secure the vehicle. Turn on the vehicle’s hazard lights immediately. If it’s safe, coast to the shoulder. Set out warning devices by placing reflecting triangles or flares behind the truck to alert oncoming traffic.
Contact dispatch or a road assistance service to report the breakdown and request help.
If possible, remain in the vehicle. If you need to leave the vehicle, do so with extreme caution and stay away from traffic.
In the Event of an Accident
Immediately check for injuries and call 911 for emergency services if you or anyone is hurt. Turn on hazard lights and set out warning devices. If safe to do so, take photos of the scene and gather evidence. Exchange insurance information and report the accident to your motor carrier and insurance provider.
Dealing with a Truck Fire
According to the NFPA, mechanical failure is the leading cause of truck fires. Other causes include underinflated tires or dual tires that touch; short circuits from loose electrical connections; fuel fires caused by spilled fuel, loose fuel lines, or smoking; and cargo fires due to improperly sealed or loaded freight.
In the event of a truck fire, move to safety and away from traffic, turn off the engine, evacuate at least 100 feet away from the fire, and call 911 to report the fire and your location. If it’s safe, grab your phone and a fire extinguisher.
General Tips to Handle Emergencies
Always keep an emergency kit in your truck with a first aid kit, flashlight, jumper cables, and basic supplies. Be sure to plan ahead by checking weather forecasts and adjusting your route as needed before trips. Conduct pre-trip inspections, focusing on tires, brakes, and lights, and make any necessary repairs immediately.
