FMCSA’s New MOTUS System: What Trucking Companies Need to Know

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has released a new platform called the MOTUS USDOT Registration System, changing how motor carriers, brokers, freight forwarders, and other regulated entities manage their USDOT registration information.

If your company already has a USDOT number, you’ll need to claim your record in the new system to ensure your information remains accurate and accessible.

What Is MOTUS?

MOTUS is designed to streamline how regulated entities manage their registration records. Rather than relying on previous FMCSA registration systems, carriers will now use this platform to access, update, and certify company information.

The new system allows carriers to import their existing company data, review their records, update information as needed, and maintain compliance through a more modern online experience.

What Motor Carriers Need to Do

If you already have a USDOT number, the first step is to claim your company’s record in MOTUS.

To get started:

  • Log in to MOTUS using your existing Login.gov account.
  • Complete your user profile and identity verification.
  • Link and claim your existing USDOT number.
  • Verify your identity using the confirmation code sent to your email.
  • Review your company information for accuracy.
  • Certify the information and complete the claiming process.

Once completed, your USDOT record will be connected to your new MOTUS account.

Important Reminder

FMCSA notes that you must use the same Login.gov email address that was previously associated with your company’s FMCSA registration to successfully claim your USDOT number.

After claiming your account, motor carriers should carefully review all business information, including contact details, ownership information, and operational data, and update any outdated information before completing final certification.

Why This Is Important

Maintaining accurate USDOT registration information is an important compliance responsibility. During the final certification process, companies must attest that their records are accurate, complete, and up to date, and acknowledge their obligation to update information when changes occur.

Moving to MOTUS also gives carriers direct access to their registration information through FMCSA’s new platform, making it easier to manage records and stay current with federal requirements.

Don’t Wait Until You Need It

Even if you are not currently making changes to your registration, it’s a good idea to claim your USDOT number in MOTUS now rather than waiting until a renewal, update, or compliance deadline approaches.

Taking a few minutes to set up your account today can help prevent delays and ensure uninterrupted access to your company’s FMCSA registration records.
